“Dear Ronald McDonald House,
It has now been seven weeks since we returned home, and not a day passes that we don’t think about the profound impact that your organisation has had on our journey with our daughter, Sienna Grace.
From your caring staff, to your amazing facilities that became our home away from home – you supported us as we navigated some of the most unimaginable and difficult times of our lives. There is a saying that resonates deeply with me: no one expects or plans a sudden life event or truly understands how it will impact their family, until it happens.
Our family – My partner Nick, sons (Corbyn & James) and I – were welcomed into the Ronald McDonald House North Fitzroy on the 27th of August 2025, after we unexpectedly welcomed our beautiful baby girl into the world 15 weeks early. We spent a total of 17 weeks at the House. From the moment the doors opened, we were in awe. The high ceilings, the stunning architectural windows, the proximity to the bike track with its city views and beautiful homes, the nearby coffee shops, and the close distance to the hospital all brought comfort during such an uncertain time. As we walked through those doors, we had no idea what our journey would look like or how long this House would become our home.
Looking back now, it is easier to see the moments of sunshine that RMHC brought into some of our darkest days.
I found beauty in watching the sunlight flicker through those large windows, spilling across the kitchen and onto the dining tables. A common area where families could freely gather to share meals and support one another. I found comfort in watching the trees at the front blossom, leaving winter behind as their leaves grew larger and greener. In my heart, this became a symbol that our daughter’s lungs were growing too – becoming stronger and more capable with each passing day. I would often sit beneath those trees and reflect on the changing seasons, each one bringing new life and beauty.
As the months pass, I feel incredibly fortunate to have been referred to Ronald McDonald House, and forever grateful to be a part of this community.
It now feels bittersweet to return to the House for specialist appointments with our darling baby Sienna, as we can now stay together as a whole family, and she can share in the experience that once sustained us. Together we now walk along that same bike path, showing her the scenery and introducing her to the people who helped keep us in staying strong while she fought so bravely.
With heartfelt thanks,
Melissa, Nick, Corbyn, James & Sienna”
